Surprise parties can be the most difficult to plan. Typically, you can collaborate with the birthday person to make sure all the wheels stay turning and the party is a hit but when it’s a surprise, you can’t do that. Since you won’t have their help, reach out to another person that is close to them to plan the party. The following are some tips on what you need to plan a surprise party…

Budgeting a Surprise Party

Even with a surprise party, a budget should still be the first step for all things to follow.

Choose a Theme

You have the opportunity to pick whichever theme you want but make sure it’s one that the person will like. If you need help with ideas, ask some of your mutual friends.

What Date?

This can be tricky but you’ll need to find out when the birthday person is free without setting off any red flags. One idea is to ask them to meet you for a late lunch and then have them meet you at the venue.

What Venue

Hosting the party at your house is one way to keep the party a surprise. You could ask them to pick you up for an “outing” and when they walk in, they’ll be in for a sweet surprise. Memorie Makers Cupcakery is a great place to have your party.

Guest List

Picking who to invite can be a little challenging with a surprise party. You won’t be able to ask the birthday person who they want to attend. So think about if they would want to have family there and which friends they would include in the festivities. If they are more reserved, a small party would be more suitable. If they are outgoing and have a lot of friends, you can host a larger party but be sure that your budget and venue can accommodate more guests.

Invitations

Again, you should send out invitations at least one month before the party. Remind the birthday person to mark their calendars for your “outing.” Also, make sure that you tell all guests that the party is a surprise so no one ruins the fun. When setting the time, be sure to ask the guests to arrive about an hour early.

Food and Drinks

The food and beverages will be the same as other parties. You should pick foods that the birthday person likes.

Don’t Forget Desert… Cake, Cupcakes, and Cookies!

Create custom cakes, cupcakes and cookies for the special occasion from a bakery who can create baked goods to theme of the party!

Party Favors

No matter what kind of party you’re hosting, party favors are part of proper party etiquette. Connect the theme and/or age of the birthday person to the party favors so that writhing coordinates. Custom m&ms and other treats are a hit.

How Long Will it Last?

Guests should expect you arrive early, so you might find that surprise parties last as long or longer than a typical adult party.
